E-STEAM ON THE CLOUD (E-SOC)
The world is changing at an unprecedented pace and there is a need to raise the awareness of teachers and policymakers on gender balance in STEAM in a much more specific way, providing them with resources and strategies that will support them in the promotion of gender equality in the classroom. A few projects have targeted school education professionals through a generalist approach offering online/blended training on gender in education but specific attention to gender DEEPER LEARNING, developing cognitive and interpersonal, and intrapersonal competencies related to STE(A)M education has been missing. The educational materials used in the classroom can have a detrimental impact on girls’ decisions to follow science and technology degrees, as long as they provide sexist and/or stereotypical depictions of men and women, especially in relation to scientific and academic activities.
Also, teachers’ beliefs and attitudes, their behaviour, and their expectations of students can have a profound effect on girls’ academic interest and performance in STEAM subjects. Likewise, several studies have revealed that interactions between teachers and students “can influence girls” engagement, self-confidence, performance, and persistence in STEAM studies. Nevertheless, policymakers have a paramount role in overcoming gender inequalities in strategic domains for the knowledge economy. The challenge for them is related to the importance of introducing a gender approach in educational curricula. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development has defined in its 4th goal the need to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. This means that educational systems should have in mind the need to introduce gender debate in different areas of education, from teacher training to subject knowledge definition, to change traditional gender roles and stereotypes.
